Ode to Public Transportation

Buses, trains, subways, metros, trolleys - whatever you call it, count me in. Although, let me specify. I love the freedom and flexibility public transportation provides, with inexpensive costs and the removal of the need to park. But, I also like decent cleanliness and clear maps and guides to directions. So, a good system brings me a certain kind of joy.

One of the most difficult transitions from Washington D.C. to Reno, NV was the need for a car. I bought my first car in Reno, a beautiful Honda Fit that really did me well. It got me to and from work with no car troubles, magically fit furniture you would never think a small hatchback could, and across the country during my road trip in November.

That being said, I did not like needing to drive everywhere. My first apartment was a struggle with almost nothing within walking distance. I was much happier moving to midtown where I could walk to restaurants, bars, and even grocery stores. I’ve realized I enjoy being a car owner for adventures and activities, but like my everyday to have other options.

Within my first few hours in Sydney, I fell in love with the public transportation. I bought an Opal Card at the airport, which has become my ticket around the city. The directions to my AirBnB told me exactly what exit to leave my first transfer station and the direction of the street to find the bus stop (even more helpful since I’m very confused with the cars driving on the opposite side of the road).

We’ll see what my experience driving here and with transportation in other cities is like. For now, thank you Sydney and your Opal Card!
