One Grand Adventure

I did not have nearly enough time in the Grand Canyon. I spent one day from sunrise to sunset exploring the park (although there was a nap in between!)

I pulled myself out of my sleeping bag, this time I was in my tent, to start the 25 minute walk to Mather’s Point. As I hadn’t scoped out the path when it was light, I got somewhat turned around. But I made it with plenty of time before the sun crested the rim. I would say more spectacular than seeing the sun itself rise was seeing the way the light lit up the rest of the canyon. Seeing the colors emerge from the rocks and the blues and pinks in the sky was the real showstopper.

Throughout the afternoon I wandered through various visitor centers, art studios, and the lodge on my journey around the Rim Trail. I made it to Hopi Point to watch the sunset.

Before heading back to my camp, I hung out in the El Tovar Lodge by the fire. This was a great place to people watch. I saw a couple on their 5th anniversary trip, with the woman happily ordering hot apple cider, no alcohol, with a sly glance to her husband and a quiet hand resting on her stomach. I saw a small boy of 5, who as soon as his grandmother came down the stairs, jumped out of his seat to offer to her and tell her she looked beautiful. One thing I’ll say about National Parks is I’ve met and seen some of the nicest people.

I do regret not spending more time at the Grand Canyon, but I hit a point of being over the cold and ready for some warmth. Plus, this is a place I know I’ll return to do the Bright Angel’s overnight hike and spend time down in the canyon. I’ll be back!
